Dragon: Ironspike Drake
Monster/NPC listings within Dragon: Ironspike Drake
Description
Ironspike drakes are typically found in mountainous area with large amounts of metallic ores. They possess dark metallic scales and numerous ridges of spines and spikes along their back, wings, neck, and face. As this species ages, their scales tend to take on a reddish tint as the ferrous metal in their scales oxidized. While they have powerful wings that span nearly three times their body length, they are unable to fly and must instead glide due to their extreme weight.
Traits
- Flaming Mucous glob: Contrary to popular belief, ironspike dragons don't actually breath fire. Instead their bodies store a toxic and reactive metal sludge in special glands at the base of the dragon's throat. As a dragon's body processes ores such as cobalt and iron to form scales, bones, and teeth, less stable and more reactive metals such as phosphorous, cesium, calcium, and sodium are filtered out. The dragon's body protects itself from this sludge with an inert glob of mucous that developes around the compounds. As a defense mechanism, the dragon can regurgitate and spit out a large ball of sludge at an opponent. When the mucous membrane around the sludge is exposed to oxygen it frequently ignites, but even if it doesn't the sludge itself is caustic enough to skin to cause severe damage to anyone struck by the sludge. A target of the sludge can attempt to dodge the attack. If the dodge attempt is successful, the victim is only splashed by some of the compound and suffers only half damage, spread evenly over the course of 1 minute. If the dodge attempt exceeds the attack roll by 40 or more points, the attack is completely avoided. It is possible to smother the chemical reaction and scrape off some of the goo, but using water is a terrible idea as it accelerates the chemical reaction. An ironspike dragon can store up to four mucous globs. Rebuilding mucous globs takes several weeks.
