On Kantia, most larger hooved animals have been driven almost extinct by humanoids and wild predators, especially bovines and equines. Instead, a variety of other animals exist, serving as the primary beasts of burden and slaughter in Kantia.

Despite the advances in technology and capabilities of magic, the beast of burden is still quite common. The most common beast of burden is the Kolpena, a large dog-like creature used for both riding and labor. Standing between 6' and 7' tall at the shoulder and capable of hauling 1000 lbs or pulling 2 to 3 tons in a wheeled cart or wagon, kolpena possess a stamina that makes them ideal for most work applications. Capable of sustaining speeds of up to 45 MPH, a Kolpena can be forced to run up to 60 MPH if needed, providing a quality mount. Kolpena are omnivorous, but their diet primarily consists of grains and grasses. They do not possess hooves, as many would expect. Rather, they have tough footpads on large clawed paws.

If treated well, Kolpena are gentle and loyal, possessing a pleasant and friendly temperament. They are not likely to participate in combat unless threatened or trained to attack.
